Web Search Without Chaos
Giving OpenClaw web access required determinism, output control, and discipline.
The Prompt That Started The Next Step
Before digging into the next track, I want to equip OpenClaw with some tools to set it up for success. First and foremost: Web searching.
That is also exactly how I tend to talk through these decisions with ChatGPT.
That was the shift.
Memory had been integrated. The system had continuity.
Now it needed visibility.
Why Web Search Isn’t a Small Feature
Adding web search sounds harmless.
It isn’t.
Live research introduces:
- Unbounded data
- Inconsistent formatting
- Marketing noise
- Token inflation
- Cost volatility
Left unchecked, it becomes context pollution.
And once polluted context enters a runtime, predictability drops.
The goal wasn’t simply: “Let OpenClaw search.”
The goal was: “Let it search without surrendering control.”
Why Tavily via MCP
Instead of relying on model-side web search, I integrated Tavily through MCP.
This separated concerns:
Research becomes a tool invocation. Reasoning remains with the model.
That boundary matters.
It allowed:
- Deterministic query execution
- Explicit control over response size
- Pre-processing before model ingestion
- Clear audit trails of what was fetched
The LLM should think.
It should not sift through raw internet clutter.
The Real Work: Minimizing Before Injection
The architectural pattern became:
Search → Filter → Compress → Inject
Not:
Search → Dump → Hope
Returned content was:
- Stripped of excess formatting
- Reduced to relevant passages
- Truncated aggressively
- Normalized into predictable structure
The model never saw the entire response.
It saw distilled signal.
That decision alone changed cost profile, latency behavior, and output quality.
But why stop at minimizing content from web search?
